On a cold, damp, windy afternoon Royston fell foul to a sucker punch in the closing minutes of a game that they needed to win to maintain their promotion challenge. It was not, however, too surprising as we had not been able to convert chances into goals once again. This was only part of the story as it was felt by many supporters that the overall performance fell well short of expectation.Perhaps we have been spoilt in the past but the truth is people feel that we have not played an entetaining style of football for the last couple of seasons. The fact that the same things are repeatedly being said about the lack of creativity and the sporadic way in which we attempt to score goals in open play along with the tendency to play the long ball to the detriment of the more exciting passing game. I hope that we can keep the limited number of supporters that we attract week in week out but I feel that the gate today of approximately 130 wiil not be enough if we get to the higher echelons of the next level of the Southern league. I must say that if you look at the league positions and the points difference between the top six clubs then it appears that it is a much of a muchness as to who will get promotion. We should be taking advantage of this situation but I fear we have'nt got the capability to do so.

Again this result shows a lack of an out and out goal scorer, such as mendy who grabbed two goals for Chalfont in this game. For me the midfield looked like a one man band with Towner seeming the only one putting himself about, and as you rightfully say the long ball game which clearly doesn't work is disheartening to say the least. Also I heard a number of shouts from the bench of the front two, this leaves me to question why the wide players say up front and didn't offer any support to defence. Which brings me to the second goal, how can a player be allowed to run across the area with three or four defenders failing to close him down? All that said this is a game that was there for the taking and should of been three points to the crows. And the Chalfont supporters rightfully said they robbed us to take the points. Again I can't help but point to the lack of depth in the squad and that some players seem to want to be carried through games.I just hope this group can prove me wrong and get promotion.

I was not a supporter of Steve castles appointment, personally feel we missed a trick by not going with Ian Benjamin. However castle deserved a chance and in my eyes he has had this chance.
Tactically inept springs to mind and the style of football is depressing which is having a knock on effect with attendances which is very worrying. I do not think his signings have set the world alight, however when you sign a player like Ryan towner who was heavily linked with Barnsley and pale last year and then the player does not even get a look in...questions need to be asked.
For the second year in succession it is a poor league and you never know, we might get away with it! Which asks the question. Is castle a good manager or a lucky manager. I am going to go with lucky.

I have to say that the cacophony of silence coming from the higher echelons of power at the Crows regarding performance and style of play, leads me to believe that I am obviously attending a different game every week than they are.Although in fairness there are only usually about four committee members who attend games both home and away so it would be difficult for any of the other committee member to give an accurate assessment of the teams overall performances. In a league that is of an average quality we tend to delude ourselves that we are a better performing side than we actually are, when the truth is we are a team that stutters from one game to another and the supporters not knowing which side will make an appearance on any given day. The questions I ask are:is this the fault of the Manager and his coaching staff? Are the players not up to playing consistently at this level? Are the players not able to understand the tactics being employed? Or are the management locked into one method of playing ie one size fits all because they are unable to change tactics to fit the situation? I ask these questions because quite frankly not knowing all the facts I have to go with what I see on the pitch every week.I do feel a sense of déjà vous because for those who have visited this forum over the years will recognise we have been here before.

3 key talking points
1. Referee Referee was awful for both sides on that day when Ryan Ingrey got brought down the Ref blew the whistle seconds after Reece Hoenes had the ball with no one near him if played advantage we could have scored. When they scored their 2nd goal seconds later one of our players got brought down in the box and Chalfont's management team thought we should have had penalty that could have made it 2-2.
2. Mendy League's top goal scorer A brilliant player who I applauded after they won the game never done it before but he should be playing in the league above but could be next season if Chalfont St Peter achieve promotion. But at half time could have sent off because someone told me that he had an argument with the ref had that happened we would have got a draw.
3. Chances missed and defence again Missed chances and poor defending cost us the 3 points we have got to stop doing that against teams mainly against the top 5. We are so unlucky that AFC Rushden & Diamonds picked up 6 points in 2 games instead of 2 since Hanwell missed a penalty againt them in the 90th minute to make it 2-2 and they scored in the 90th minute at Uxbridge to win 1-0. We battered them down their place simply because we took our chances and scored 4 as well as having solid defending. If we could play with that every time we would be top of the league.

The answers to questions being asked is simple. Steve castle doesn't know how to play any other way. His idea of hit the long ball and shout you're in every time just doesn't work, and as pointed out when you have players like Ryan Towner who is left on the bench for the likes of erkan okay who hasn't had a good game in a royston shirt and yet gets in the starting 11 every game. This has to raise questions about castle and watters as a management team. We all know the officiating at this level is horrendous at best, so surly the team needs to make its own luck and take the chances, in truth the Chalfont game should of been another 3-4 goals for the crows if someone could find the net. For me the team should be built around the backbone of McDevit and Bradshaw at centre backs and Towner and scott bridges in centre midfield with ingrey up top.
