Royston fc southern league central. Position 4th.Played 15.Won 9.Drawn 1.Goals for 34. Goals against 16.Goal Difference 18. Points 28. Tilbury fc Ryman football league division north. Position 7th.Played 17.Won 10.Drawn 3.Goals for 35.Goals against 21.Goal difference 14.Points 33. Two teams playing in equivalent leagues with not much between them as far as the league statistics show. However that is about as close as it gets because on this F.A.Trophy performance a neutral would think that Royston were at least one or two leagues below this competent Tilbury side. It is impossible not to be critical of this unimpressive non performance by a mediocre Royston side. Firstly the conditions,it was windy and wet and the pitch had pockets of water in the goal mouths and centre circle but only one side seemed to master it.Tilbury took control from the start and within two minutes were 1-0 up after a sliding tackle in the penalty area by Liam McDevitt, which was unnecessary as the player was wide of the goal and not going anywhere and in the conditions borders on lack of thought. After that Tilbury really dominated the first half increasing their lead with a well taken goal by the player on the right flank cutting inside and putting a well placed shot into the left hand corner of the net. This was followed by a shot that should have been easily saved by by Ron Yeats but he let it slip through his hands into the net to make it 3-0. Royston got one back when a shot by Luke Robbins was parried by the keeper and the rebound was put into the net by Ryan Towner. Royston started well in the second half but Tilbury increased their lead to 4-1 with some good movement in front of goal.Town did manage to get another goal when the ball found the back of the net direct from a corner. This performance was poor by any standards,so much so that supporters who have followed Crows for many years both home and away left before the final whistle having seen enough,so they said.Something I have'nt witnessed before. It seems to me we only have one way of playing and when that does'nt work we don't seem able to change the system. Anyone associated with the playing side of a football team would'nt need to be told when things are not right they instinctively know this and be prepared to put it right. Paying fans have a right to be critical but they cannot do anything but hope that the powers to be get it back on track so that their team goes forward.

I can not agree more with your comments. To me it seems we have the workers and the wanna be glory hunters in the side. Players like Liam McDevit and Jack Bradshaw who have recovered from the bad start to the season. And the always willing Ryan Towner who yet again Saturday seemed to run for several of the senior players. But then the long list of work shy and non inspiring players begins. Yes the team needs a plan B but when the ball is played through the midfield instead of being launched over it all the time then the team creates chances. The brutal truth is there are too many players that are not good enough to be on the pitch with Towner and the Bridges brothers and too many glory hunters who don't work for the team. Saturday a prime example that the left back and left striker stood watching a centre midfielder run for them and chase players they should have been marking. I feel it's time the powers that be look at the squad and realise there are too many being carried and too many Sunday league players to really push for success. We all appreciate the conditions Saturday didn't help but as you said both sides had the challenge of that so no excuses.

Firstly, let me say that the comments I make are based on how I see the performance of the team.I do not see the point of looking through rose tinted glasses just because the Crows are the team I support. Yes we are sitting in a reasonable position in the league and we have had some good performances but what everybody wants is consistency in the way we play.We go to Wingate and Finchley and play well completely different to how we played Godalming and Cheshunt. Yes team changes were made but as SC said there should be no change in quality as these are all squad players with first team experience. On the point of certain players and their performances, this is a team game and everybody from manager down has to take responsibility, however we also have to look at the indiscipline of certain players that results in the team being weakened in certain areas. I don't know that I can totally agree with comments regarding certain players performances, especially midfield and attackers who have been very inconsistent as shown by lack of goals through poor midfield service and finishing in open play. Still we will see how the rest of the season pans out now that full focus and be put on progress being made in the league.

Although I appreciate the lack of discipline doesn't help the team and I agree it's a team game. I believe you have to look at the weaknesses in the squad to start with and there are a lot of those, whether the manager wants to admit it or not. The strikers have lacked goals, there can be little argument there, and they have been given chances each and every game. But defensively the team has improved when the regular back four play, when one is missing the problems show time and time again, moving a centre half into midfield is fine if the player coming in has a similar level of ability and unfortunately that doesn't happen with this squad. the facts are simple the boss wants possession football and free flowing moves, to do that you need the midfield to pull the strings. The talent is there and when given the ball the consistency would be too, however with the changes the side has to go through with injury or suspension we see too many hit and hope balls from players that have little skill. And to come back to it being a team game, why don't some players work for the team? I will always support the crows but I will also be strongly opinionated, and the players I mentioned have been the solid performers week in and week out. Too many times have I seen individuals moaning at their team mates when they stand there doing nothing to help the team, all the want is personal glory.

I can appreciate that you have your own opinions about the team and rightly so,that's what supporting a club is all about. I think that if you feel people are not pulling their weight or are glory hunting or plain just not good enough then perhaps now is the time to name them.I would just point out, however, that you must be prepared to take the backlash that will ensue,I know because it has happened to me on number of occasions over the years which didn't deter me from my point of view. Let me start you off with the situation,as I see it,with Chris Waters, there is no doubt that he has been a good player over the years but unfortunately some lessening in his performances has become apparent. Firstly let me say that his ability to place a free kick or cross into the penalty area is second to none but this is tempered by his lack of pace and heading ability as shown in Saturday's performance at Tilbury. He was no match for the wide players who seemed to pass him far to easily, this showed that apart from anything else the winter grounds are not going to be kind to him.One other niggling thing is that he has a tendency to blame everyone else except himself when things do not go according to plan.A situation I find strange coming from an assistant to the manager, this is something often heard on the touchline by other supporters as well as myself. Hopefully he does'nt pass this on to the team as part of his coaching programme. Well there are other people I could mention but it is only right for you to have your say,I look forward to seeing your comments.

I don't believe it would be beneficial to name players that I consider not good enough. My opinion of Chris watters is simply he lacks fitness to get around the pitch like some of the other players. His ability with a ball is never questioned, I would say that yes he does put the blame on others, but he is not the only one. I think anyone who understands football can look at the crows and identify weaknesses that need to be addressed to progress and succeed.

I am going to wade into this discussion too. I cannot comment on the Tilbury game apart from the crap from the manager about conditions favouring Tilbury. ...how? What? Is he deluded? Unless god was throwing down a freakish deluge purely on royston, I would say that the conditions would be either an equal advantage or disadvantage for both sides?
What I will comment on is discipline and etiquette. It is downright disgraceful that an assistant manager gets a booking for dissent, it also proves what a poor coach hhe is with his constant critique against his own players when he often makes mistakes.
It's a poor show that players surround the referee trying to encourage a referee decision. It's cringe worthy hearing mcdevitt using a swear word in every other word. This happens every game. What is the club doing about this? Absolutely bugger all i suspect.
We are trying to encourage a family friendly environment at garden walk are we not?
Would love to hear a committee member comment on the above.

Unfortunately, although I see your point about McDevit swearing, it is part of not just football but society today that swearing is now part of every day language. I agree it's not conducive for a family environment and often my own children will comment on the swearing. But every team that comes to garden walk is going to have that one person who's use of English doesn't exceed dropping the f bomb every second word.
I do agree with your comments about the assistant manager getting book for dissent, it shows poor leadership and can encourage the younger players in the squad or indeed the children watching to follow in his footsteps.
As I have said it is time for the club to have a long look at this squad and realise the issues of disapline and quality and deal with them.

Squad discipline and behaviour has to be led by the manager and his staff. However, anyone who has played any competitive sport realises that to be successful you need to have self discipline, losing control immediately hands the opposition the advantage and in a team environment puts your own side under pressure. Most people have a lapse in self discipline at some stage because we are only human and the things done in the heat of the moment are often regretted almost immediately. What is unforgivable is that in the case of certain players in the Royston team they are serial offenders and appear to be totally unaware of the damage they are doing to them selves, their team mates and the reputation of the club.In this instance I am not going to name them because not only do they know who they are but anyone who follows the Crows will also know who they are. If these players had been available in recent games perhaps there would have been a different outcome in the results. The question is can we afford,as a club, for these players to spend so much time out of the side due to suspension? If there is no change in there attitude should they be part of the setup or perhaps look to pastures new.It does not matter how good they are if they are unavailable for team selection for long periods of the season.

To me it is abundantly clear were the issue seem to be. Every issue that is mentioned on this forum points at the managerial positions of the team. The random and unexplainable selections, the poor style of football, the weaknesses in the squad and the lack of discipline all stem from the manager. It's not nice to point the finger but a team has its leader and if he doesn't set the standards and maintain them or if he has favourite players then you have already lost.
